Troubleshooting
Fixes for Generate draft, New document and Document settings, Library on Workspace, AutoDraft, sharing, citations, and exports.
Generate draft will not run
- Confirm you are online.
- Finish any in-progress New document steps (optional Word import, title, first-run fields) until you are in the full editor on /documents.
- Open Document settings from the gear icon in the document title bar and fill required fields. Ensure a title and any other fields the UI marks as required (for example free-text setup instructions) are present when Generate draft demands them.
- Check AI words usage for your plan on the subscription page.
- Retry after a short wait if the service was busy.

Document will not save or Library will not load
- Check the save indicator in the document header.
- On Workspace (/documents), your saved files are listed under Library in the left rail: hover the Library sidebar item to preview the list beside the editor, or click it to pin the rail open. If the list is empty, start from New document in the sidebar or the Library rail header.
- If you self-host or run a local stack, ensure the database and migrations are applied; setup errors sometimes surface on /documents when tables are missing.
AutoDraft is off or never suggests
- Turn on account-wide AutoDraft under Account → Writing style, then use the editor toolbar toggle so ghost suggestions are allowed for that document (when your plan and environment support it).
- AutoDraft reacts to what you type; write a clear lead sentence so the next line has something to continue.
See AutoDraft.
I cannot find Document settings or export
- Document settings (structured setup, article writer options, and other document-level controls) open from the gear icon in the document title bar—not from a separate template catalog. Export lives under More document actions (⋯) → Export while a document is open.
- If an action is missing, your plan or deployment may not include it.
Old bookmark opens the wrong place
- Older links to /templates or similar catalog routes may redirect into Workspace (/documents). Start work with New document or open a doc from Library, then use Document settings on that document. See New documents and copies.
Wrong Share control (Library vs document)
- Share next to the document title while a document is open sets access for that file and real-time collaboration. Share folder in Library is for a folder and its documents together—a different scope. See Sharing: documents vs Library folders.
I cannot edit or comment in a shared document
- Confirm your assigned role in that document:
- Editor can edit and comment
- Commenter can comment only
- Viewer can read only
- If the role is incorrect, ask the document owner to update access in Share.
I do not see Comments in the menu
- Comments stay hidden until the owner has invited or added at least one collaborator.
- Ask the owner to use Share, then reopen the header ⋯ menu.
“From library” is empty in Insert citation
- Add sources from Saved references → New from… (Paste ID, Paste bibliography, Import .bib/.ris, or PDF), then reopen From library.
- Refresh references only rebuilds the bibliography; it does not populate the saved library.
Bibliography looks wrong or empty
- Insert citations with Insert citation, then click Refresh references.
- Confirm a citation style is selected where the UI offers it.
- If you use page locators, confirm the Show page number in citations toggle matches your preference.
Cloud export or Drive / OneDrive
- Reconnect under Account → Integrations. OAuth availability depends on your deployment and feature flags. Quick file exports use ⋯ → Export; cloud flows may also appear from Document settings (gear) depending on your layout.
No Saved references panel
- Requires Student, PRO, or Platinum (not Free) and Workspace with the References sidebar entry. Same hover to preview / click to pin behavior as Library. If you are on a supported plan and still do not see it, your deployment may omit reference tools.
Review or Clara panel will not stay open
- Use the Review or Clara button in the document header to toggle the right-hand rail. If a panel closes when you move the mouse, click the same button again to reopen it.
- Library and References on the left use hover to preview and click to pin; collapse with the chevron in the rail if you want more editor space.
